Actress Abla Kamel makes surprise comeback after eight-year absence
CAIRO – Egyptian actress Abla Kamel is topping social media trends following her unexpected appearance in a commercial campaign released to coincide with the Ramadan 2026 season, marking her first on-screen presence in nearly eight years.
The advert, launched at the start of the holy month, sparked widespread reaction across social media platforms, with fans expressing surprise and delight at seeing the celebrated actress return, even briefly, after a prolonged absence from the spotlight.
Kamel’s appearance came as a particular surprise given her extended withdrawal from public life. The campaign also featured a host of prominent Egyptian stars, including Mohamed Mounir, Menna Shalabi, Amir Eid, Asmaa Galal, Mohamed Mamdouh, Taha Desouky, Mostafa Gharib and Hatem Salah, giving the production a distinctly artistic flavour. Yet it was Kamel’s name that quickly dominated online search trends, underscoring her enduring place in the hearts of Arab audiences.
In the advert, Kamel appears for only a few seconds in a single scene, welcoming actresses Yasmin Abdulaziz and Menna Shalabi into her home as they visit to check on her wellbeing. The commercial concludes with a brief voiceover by Kamel, a simple but powerful moment that resonated deeply with viewers.
Despite the brevity of her appearance, audiences expressed immense joy and respect for an actress widely regarded as a symbol of authentic, family-oriented Egyptian drama. Many lamented the short duration of her cameo, voicing hopes that it signals the beginning of a broader artistic comeback. The emotional timing, at the start of Ramadan, added to the impact, with many fans admitting they were moved simply by seeing her again.
Kamel’s reappearance follows repeated attempts by directors and producers over the years to persuade her to return to acting, efforts that had previously failed. She ultimately agreed to participate in the commercial, which is being broadcast across satellite channels throughout Ramadan.
The actress had recently trended online amid speculation about her health after reports circulated that she had suffered a medical crisis requiring hospital treatment. The controversy followed a decision by the Egyptian Actors’ Syndicate, in coordination with the state, to provide medical treatment for senior artists at state expense.
In response, Kamel sent a voice message to her fans, broadcast by television presenter Lamis Elhadidy in December, clarifying her condition. She confirmed that she was in stable health and expressed gratitude for what she described as a “kind and wonderful gesture” by President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi regarding the decision to support veteran artists.
In the recording, she stressed that she was in good health after undergoing several operations in recent months and clarified that she was covering her medical treatment at her own expense, adding that she was not in need of financial assistance. She also referred to the decision to include her name among the artists eligible for state-funded medical care.
Kamel’s last television appearance was in the fifth instalment of her series “Selsal El Dam” (Chains of Blood), broadcast in 2018. The drama starred actors including Ryad El Khouly, Rami Wahid, Diaa Abdel Khalek and Randa El Behery, with later additions such as Ahmed Bedier and Rania Farid Shawky. The series was written by Magdy Saber, directed by Mostafa Elshal and produced by Loay Abdallah.
In cinema, her last film appearance was in “Al Kibar” (The Seniors) in 2010, alongside actor Amr Saad.
For many viewers, however, the few seconds she appeared on screen this Ramadan were enough to reignite admiration for one of Egypt’s most beloved performers, and perhaps hint at a long-awaited return.
