Road accident kills 18 near Port Said in Egypt
PORT SAID - A devastating road accident near Port Said on Wednesday claimed 18 lives and injured three others when a heavy lorry collided with a pickup truck carrying workers. The crash occurred on the 30 June Axis highway south of the city, marking a tragic start to Ramadan.
The pickup truck was transporting fishermen and labourers from El Matariya in Dakahlia governorate to fish farms in Port Said around 12:30 p.m.
Ambulances rushed the casualties to multiple hospitals, including 30 June Hospital, El Nasr, El Zohour, and As-Salam. Images showed the pickup crushed between lorries amid scattered debris, highlighting the collision's severity.
Port Said Governor Ibrahim Abu Limon visited the site and hospitals to ensure care for the injured. Dakahlia Governor Tarek Marzouk coordinated aid and compensation with national authorities, while Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly offered condolences and ordered financial support for families.
Egypt sees thousands of road deaths yearly, often due to speeding, overloading, and poor vehicle conditions. Public prosecutors launched an investigation into the crash's cause to prevent future tragedies.
