Mali’s army thwarts terrorist attacks in several cities across country

BAMAKO - The Malian Army announced Saturday that it foiled “terrorist” attacks carried out by armed groups in several cities across the country.

In a statement, the military explained that these attempts were met with "heavy losses" among the attackers, thanks to what it described as the "professionalism and commitment" of the Malian Armed Forces. The statement noted that a number of armed elements were neutralized and their military equipment was destroyed.

The statement added that sweep operations are still ongoing in the targeted areas, confirming that the situation is "under control."

The army called on residents to remain calm and avoid circulating any video clips or propaganda messages that could fuel public anxiety, emphasizing the necessity of relying exclusively on official channels for reliable information.

The sound of explosions and simultaneous gunfire was heard in several cities in Mali on Saturday morning, according to local media reports, in a significant security development covering various parts of the country.

Media reports stated that violent explosions rocked the city of Kati, near the capital Bamako, which houses one of the country's most prominent military bases. Authorities deployed security reinforcements and closed major streets in the city.

Meanwhile, the United States strongly condemned the attacks that took place today in Mali, describing them as an "act of terrorism." Washington expressed its sincere condolences to the victims of the attacks, their families, and all those affected, affirming its support for the people and government of Mali in the face of acts of violence.

The United States renewed its commitment to supporting efforts aimed at promoting peace, stability, and security in Mali and the Sahel region.

The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali, expressed "grave concern" over the reported attacks in Mali, which targeted the capital, Bamako, and a number of urban centers across the country.

He strongly condemned these attacks, warning that they could expose civilians to grave risks, and reaffirmed the African Union's commitment to continue supporting efforts to promote peace, security, good governance, and stability in Mali.

He also expressed the African Union's full solidarity with the Malian people, the defense and security forces, and the national authorities of the country.
